What do VO, VOST and VOSTFR mean?
French cinemas use a few short labels to tell you how a film is presented:
- VO (version originale) means the film plays in its original language instead of being dubbed into French. It means English audio only when English is the film’s original language.
- VOST and VOSTFR (version originale sous-titrée, sous-titrée en français) mean the original soundtrack with subtitles; VOSTFR specifies French subtitles.
For an English-language film, all three mean you will hear the film in English. VF (version française) means a French-language version, including a French dub of a foreign-language film. English Cinema Nice only includes screenings with English audio; English subtitles alone do not qualify. When booking on a cinema operator’s own broader programme, check the audio and subtitle details for your chosen session.
