What do VO, VOST and VOSTFR mean?
French cinemas use a few short labels to tell you how a film is presented:
- VO (version originale) means the film plays in its original language instead of being dubbed into French. For a Hollywood or British release, that original language is English.
- VOST and VOSTFR (version originale sous-titrée, sous-titrée en français) mean the same original soundtrack, with French subtitles on screen.
For an English-language film, all three mean you will hear the film in English. The label to avoid is VF (version française), which is dubbed into French.
